Twists and Cornrows to the Side

This style was pretty easy to do. First, I made a part that was slightly off-center. Then I added a handful of cornrows that went from her ear up to the part. There wasn't much rhyme or reason as to where the cornrow parts were made...I just started parting. The rest of her hair was then put into about 30 two strand twists.

Syd only wore her hair down like this once. The rest of the time, she wore the twists pulled into a low side ponytail (and sometimes wore a huge flower with it).

Excuse the black box. Her last name is on this shirt and we had to block that out. :)

If you 've been following us for any length of time, you can probably guess what happened next. After a couple days of the twists being in a side pony, the twists became a twist out. The twist out was then pulled into the same side ponytail.

We may have to revisit this style again soon. It is so versatile, being worn 3 different ways in one week. And if we change the size and parts of the cornrows, it will again have a completely different look!

Easy Christmas Style

I hope you all had a great Christmas!

My original goal was to take pictures of Syd's hair, which she styled herself in a simple twist out for Christmas. Unfortunately, I spaced out and didn't take a single picture of the back of her hair. So now all I can do is show you a picture of the twists on Christmas Eve and another of the twist out on Christmas morning. Better than nothing, right? :)

In the picture below, you can see Syd's twists that were done on Christmas Eve. She has a little side part and some pretty chunky twists.

The next morning, Syd removed the twists and put on a headband that she found in her stocking. It was nice to have her hair looking good after using up just few minutes of Christmas morning for styling.

Quick, easy, and cute.....perfect for Christmas morning!

Twist - Twist Out - Retwist

Syd has been wearing a LOT of twists lately. It's quickly becoming her signature style. Here's a picture of some medium sized twists she wore last week:

She only wore those twists for one day because we wanted a big, full twist out for our Thanksgiving get together with my family. It was almost painful to remove such pretty twists when they were still looking so good! Luckily, it made for a wonderful looking twist out.

She wore that twist out for two days, but we had to twist her back up because this week is going to be a busy, rainy week and we won't have much time to worry about hair.

Since her twist out was still really defined when I was doing a new set of twists, I decided to let the definition help me out. I simply grabbed each tendril that resulted from the first twists, lightly misted it with just water, and twisted. Her hair still had enough product in it from the first twists, so we didn't have to add any more product.
Each defined section of hair went from this...

...to this!
Since each twist from the first set made two defined tendrils, the second set of twists had twice the number of twists as the first one did. Here was the final result:

These 78 twists (yes, we counted) should definitely get us through the week. Maybe even longer!

Halloween Hair

Let be start off by apologizing for my absence recently. I've been struggling with some health issues and hair/blogging has been knocked down a few pegs on the priority list. Syd has only been wearing two strand twists and twist outs for the last couple of weeks, but we'll get back to doing more fun hairstyles soon.

And now....on to our Halloween Hairstyle!

Syd dressed up as the Mad Hatter this year. The pictures in this post were taken just before she headed out to a costume party.

Since the Mad Hatter is actually male, I didn't really have a specific hairstyle to try to pull off. I didn't even have a plan when it came time for the style...I just sat down with some bobby pins and started using them.

We began with Syd's standard style, a basic two strand twist out.

I pulled the top back into a standard half up - half down style and secured it with an ouchless band. Then I divided the hair in that band into 4 sections. I twisted each section around itself and pinned them into place. It ended up reminding me a little of a four leaf clover. I then added the top hat just in front of the clover shape, pinning it into place with a few bobby pins.

I have a couple of pink clip-in human hair extensions, so we decided to use those for this style to make it look a little more eclectic. I used Curlformers to curl them, but the extensions didn't have enough time to dry completely and the curls were still much looser than her twist out pattern. One was actually still so damp that it lost almost all the curl within an hour. Oh well...that just added to the fun look.
She had a blast at the party and her hair held up the entire night, despite the fact that she spent quite a bit of time jumping on a trampoline. Thank goodness I used more bobby pins than I thought I needed!

This costume fits her personality PERFECTLY! I love it!

The Sincerest Form of Flattery: Goldilocks*n*Me

I am participating in this month's Hair Carnival with several other bloggers. The theme this month is to copy a style that we've seen on someone else's blog. This makes it the perfect time to introduce a new feature on Tweeny Hair called The Sincerest Form of Flattery. This feature will pop up from time to time whenever I find a style on someone else's blog that I want to try to imitate.

For the September Hair Carnival, I have decided to recreate the lacing style I saw on the blog Goldilocks*n*Me. I did have to alter the style a bit by using a twist out where Goldilocks had worn a wash and go style.

I kind of cheated to start this style because Syd had previously worn her hair in basic two strand twists. When I sat down in the evening to style Syd's hair, I kept those twists and just parted out a section on one side of the front of her hair. I put that section of hair into 2 cornrows going toward her crown. I secured the 2 cornrows together with a green rubber band.

I twisted the hair coming out of the rubber band in about three 2 strand twists.

Then I removed a few twists in the front of her hair on the other side and changed them into a couple of chunky flat twists, simply because twist outs from flat twists lay closer to the scalp.

The rest of her hair was still in the 2 strand twists she had worn for a a few days before.

In the morning, I used a craft needle and a green and white ribbon to do the lacing part of the style. I literally just laced her two cornrows as though I was lacing up a pair of shoes. When I reached the green rubber band, I tied the two ends of the ribbon in a bow.

I removed all the twists so the majority of Syd's hair was worn in a twist out.
Ignore the allergy eyes in this pic. Poor kid. :(
By the time Syd got home from school and cross country practice, the twist out had gained a lot of volume. She loved it.

Syd loves the lacing style. She wants to start doing them on the days she has cross country meets because the style looks so much like a laced up pair of running shoes. I think that's definitely doable.

Thanks so much to Goldilocks*n*Me for inspiring this style!

"X" Veil Twist Out

We have been doing a lot of twists and twist outs lately, and this style is another example of that. But we try not to do a plain old twist out very often. There are always new ways to change it up.

To make the X shape in the front of Syd's hair, I made 2 rows of 4 boxes across the front. I used those boxes to make an X shape on each side of her hair.

Before connecting the front row to the second, I twisted each section to give it more of a clean look. And we used purple rubber bands simply because Syd wanted to. :)

I then put the rest of her hair into 2 strand twists.

The next day was Syd's first middle school dance. We took her twists out so she could have a fresh looking twist out for the dance.

Twist outs will probably remain a style that is used a lot at our house. They are simple enough for Syd to help with, they don't take as long to do as more intricate styles, and there are countless ways to change them up.

Do you have a style that you tend to fall back on more than any others?

Back to School Twist Out

Today was Syd's first day of middle school! She liked her last twist out so much that she decided she wanted another one for the all-important first day hairstyle.

I decided to give her a simple braided headband in addition to the twist out. I made it very basic, with a part in the middle of her head and one cornrow down each side of her face toward her ear. The back of the hair was put into three strand twists. I used Oyin Handmade Burnt Sugar Pomade for both the cornrows and the twists.

She wore her hair in the twists all day Sunday. The twists were removed Monday morning, but the cornrows along the edges were left in.

The result was a gorgeous twist out, a protected hairline, and one happy middle schooler!

Three Strand Twist Out

As expected, Syd only kept her three strand twists in for a couple of days. When the twists were removed, the result was a twist out that looked amazing.

To remove each twist I used my fingers to separate the three sections at the root. I then gently moved my fingers to the ends to separate each twist into 3 curly sections of hair. I did nothing beyond that. The more you manipulate the hair, the fuzzier it is likely to become.

After all the twists were removed, Syd added her headband she bought in Guatemala and styling was done. I absolutely love the way it looks.

To go to bed, we gently banded her curls into a few sections. We only put a few bands on each section and kept the bands themselves very loose. We also wrapped her hair with a satin scarf and she slept on her satin pillowcase.

The following picture was taken right before we removed the bands in the morning.

After a bit of very light fluffing, her hair looked amazing for day 2.

We did run into some issues after Syd went for a run later that day. She got pretty sweaty, which frizzed up her roots quite a bit.

We had plans to go out with friends, so we just pulled the front half of her hair up to hide the frizz.

We banded her hair again overnight. When she woke up this morning the frizzy roots had gotten even bigger, but the rest of her hair was still looking pretty good. We pulled her hair into a ponytail to hide the roots and we were done for the day.

We were both thrilled with the results of this twist out. Syd actually already said this will probably be what she wants for school pictures this year.

We could probably stretch this twist out to make it last another day or two, but cross country practice starts bright and early tomorrow morning. I think we're going to find something that's a little more sweat-friendly.
